Ford Issues Lincoln Recall

Ford Motor Company Issues Recall:

DEARBORN, Mich., May 18 (Reuters) -
Ford Motor Co. is recalling 279,000 1992-93 Lincoln Town Car, Mercury Grand Marquis and Ford Crown Victoria sedans because of a cruise control switch problem that could cause a fire, the company said on Tuesday.
Ford said it has received reports of two injuries and 147 fires stemming from the switch problems. There have been no reports of fatalities.
The company said a defective cruise control activation switch could short circuit and result in a fire. A short also could disable the cruise control system or blow the brake light fuse.
The world's No. 2 automaker expects to have enough replacement switches and connectors by June. As an interim step, the company is asking consumers to bring their car to a dealership to have an electrical connector disconnected. The action will also disable the cruise control.
Ford will then ask owners to bring their cars back to dealers when it has enough new switches and connectors to replace the faulty ones. The replacement will take less than half a day, said Ford spokeswoman Karen Shaughnessy.
The defective parts were produced by an outside supplier. Shaughnessy declined to identify the supplier. ((Detroit Newsroom, 313-870-0200))
