If you are one of 26 million owners of a Ford manufactured vehicle
that contains an ignition switch that starts fires, here are some tips
to avoid serious damage and potentially fatal circumstances:

If your vehicle is included in Ford's Recall

According for Ford, you do NOT have to wait to receive Ford's Recall Letter to get your switch replaced for FREE.

Ford Dealers are supposed to already have instructions to replace your ignition switch with an improved version. As soon as possible, call your local Ford Dealer and schedule your ignition switch replacement.

DO NOT DELAY. DO THIS TODAY!

  Don't park in a garage

Vehicles with this faulty switch CAN burst into flames after sitting idle for hours (ours did!). If the vehicle is parked in a garage and a fire starts, you are likely to lose your home and you are endangering your life and the life of your family.

Although no deaths have yet been reported due to a Ford faulty switch related fire, it is highly likely this has occurred.

At issue is that there are no significant reporting procedures of databases of fires in the United States. Fires resulting from this switch in the US are most likely listed as "unknown origin" and no cross-reference or research method exists to make any better determination.

Unplug your battery when the vehicle is parked

This is the best prevention you've got. If there is no electricity feeding the switch, it cannot start a fire.

Yes, this is a pain and most people will not consider going to this extent to protect themselves. But, if you leave your battery connected while your vehicle is parked, you are running the risk of a fire starting even after it's been parked for hours.

Keep a fire extinguisher handy and in the vehicle at all times

If a fire does start and you catch it within the first few minutes, you may be able to save your vehicle from serious damage by having a fire extinguisher at the ready.

Remember that this starts as an electrical fire so you need to have the right type of extinguisher available. Also, if a fire does start, or you start smelling smoke in your car or truck, immediately unplug the battery.
