FORD ANNOUNCES SAFETY RECALL

Detroit, April 25/PRNewswire/ - Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), in close cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Transport Canada, has conducted an extensive investigation of ignition switches in Ford and Lincoln-Mercury cars and trucks.
As a result of this investigation, Ford will notify approximately 8.7 million customers in the US and Canada of a safety recall involving certain 1988 - 1993 model year cars and trucks.
In a very small number of vehicles, the ignition switch could experience an internal short circuit, creating the potential for overheating, smoke, and possibly fire in the steering column area of the vehicle.
In the US the following vehicles are involved:
1988 - 1990 Escort
1988 EXP
1988 - 1992 and early build 1993 Mustang
1988 - 1992 and early build 1993 Tempo/Topaz
1988 - 1992 and early build 1993 Thunderbird/Cougar
1988 - 1989 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis
1988 - 1989 Lincoln Town Car
1988 - 1991 Aerostar
1988 - 1991 Bronco/F-Series Light Trucks

In Canada, 611,000 vehicles are being added to a safety recall announced in November 1995. They are as follows:
1988 Escort
1988 EXP
1988 - 1992 and early build 1993 Mustang
1988 - 1992 and early build 1993 Tempo/Topaz
1988, 1989, 1992 and early build 1993 Thunderbird/Cougar
1988 Lincoln Town Car
1988 Aerostar
1988, 1989, and 1991 Bronco/F-Series Light Trucks

Those previously announced included:
1989 - 1990 Escort
1989 - 1991 Mustang
1990 - 1991 Thunderbird/Cougar
1988 - 1989 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail to arrange with their dealers to have the switch replace, at no cost to owners. Should an owner wish to have the switch replaced in advance of being notified by mail, dealers have been provided instructions and can accommodate them.
